Our research group at the Chair for Laser Technology focuses on Thin Film Processing, Surface Structuring, Laser Drilling and Modelling of Laser-Material Interactions. We analyse and investigate complex laser-based material processing techniques for implementing and improving the efficiency of micro- and nano functional features of precision components.

This role is associated with supporting our scientific staff working on ongoing project focused on understanding the physical principles of ablation of surfaces with ultrashort pulse lasers and developing computational models to accurately track and recreate the complex physics occuring, on such extremely small time and length scales, during the process. 

Your ProfileYour Profile

  • Enrolled student preferably in the areas of Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or Engineering
  • Reliable, structured, and independent working style
  • Good programming skills in Python and/or C++
  • Good background knowledge of electromagnetism, optics and heat transfer
  • Familarity with numerical modelling schemes such as FEM, FDM etc.
  • Good command of English (fluent) / German (advantageous) 

Your Duties and ResponsibilitiesYour Duties and Responsibilities

As a student assistant, you will support our research team with hands-on tasks, which may include:

  • Support for the development and implementation of Python/C++ scripts
  • Literature reviews
  • Asistance with preparation of scientific presentations, documentation, or reports
  • Support for building and developing numerical models of electromagentic wave propagation, optical modelling and/or heat diffusion

The successful candidate will be employed as a student assistant.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of one year.
We aim to offer employment beyond this period.
This is a part-time contract position.
The standard weekly hours will be 12 hours.
The amount of working hours per week can be adjusted.
The salary is based on the RWTH Guidelines for Student and Graduate Assistants.
The position corresponds to a pay grade of 15.20 euros per hour.
