At the Institute for Rail Vehicles (IFS), we are working on innovative solutions for the future of automated freight transport. Our current focus lies on the development of vehicle control systems, obstacle detection software, and vehicle communication.

To support our research and development projects, we are looking for a motivated student assistant with an interest in automation, robotics, and railway vehicle engineering. The role covers autonomous systems, vehicle control, and virtual testing with ROS2 and Gazebo for various rail vehicles used in freight transport.

In addition to simulation work, there is also the opportunity to gain practical experience with real vehicles and test platforms

Your ProfileYour Profile

  • Current degree studies in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, or a comparable subject
  • Good programming skills in Python
  • Ideally knowledge of C++ or additional programming languages
  • Interest in ROS2, Gazebo, robotics, and rail freight transport
  • Structured, independent, and reliable way of working
  • Good communication skills in English or German

Your Duties and ResponsibilitiesYour Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the development and implementation of automation functions
  • Building, maintaining, and expanding simulation environments using ROS2 and Gazebo
  • Support for the implementing and testing control, regulation, and perception functions
  • Supporting tests with real vehicles and demonstrators
  • Assisting in the integration of new software components into existing systems

What We OfferWhat We Offer

The successful candidate will be employed as a student assistant.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of one year.
Continued employment is planned and desired.
This is a part-time contract position.
The standard weekly hours will be 8-19 hours.
The salary is based on the RWTH Guidelines for Student and Graduate Assistants.
The position corresponds to a pay grade of 15.20 euros per hour.
